Knutsford 5-1 Whaley Bridge

Congratulations to Knutsford who were well organised and the more ruthless in front of goal on the day.  Whaley’s squad consisted of four under 16s & 3 trialists and all involved acquitted themselves well although the score-line may not suggest that.

Whaley kicked against a strong wind and were arguably the better side for the first half hour albeit conceding the first goal to a long range speculative effort which eventually came down from space in the wind to hit the top of one post and bounce in across the goal. Whaley soon levelled when Barlow was tripped while advancing in on Knutsford’s area after a cheeky one-two; Sutton opened his account this season making sure with his penalty as usual.

Even though the elements were extremely difficult to play against Whaley’s general play was ok with the youngsters playing some nice open football but a poor last ten minutes in the first half settled the game; the visitors conceding direct from a Bradley West comer that swerved viciously in the swirling wind to go in straight over Tattersall’s head. Minutes later a long range strike beat Tattersall at his near side to put the home side 3-1 up at the break. Whaley’s back four of Drayson Sutton Turner & Broome had coped really well against a vibrant Knutsford forward line and the inconsistent elements; O’Donnell and Leadbetter also linking up well in their first aver pairing up front.

Expecting to come out playing with a big wind advantage in the second half the visitors were surprised to note that it had dropped completely and the same conditions didn’t affect Knutsford second half as they had Whaley in the first… but that’s football and English weather! Whaley were better off the blocks but for all their endeavours couldn’t get the all-important final touch to get back into the game; Leadbetter flashing crosses in front of goal several times without success.

Possibly the turning point in the game came and went when both Barlow and Langford had 18 yard shots saved magnificently by Knutsford’s keeper who tipped both on to the cross bar. Whaley attacked again but a Whaley cross was charged down allowing Knutsford to break and three passes later West slotted in again, he completed his hatrick when tired Whaley legs resulted in a miss-timed challenge and a late penalty for Knutsford to complete the scoring.

Credit to both teams who played the game in the correct manner with both clubs giving local youth a chance in an ever increasingly difficult environment for local fotball to survive.

Whaley Bridge 4-2 Rylands

Positive finish to the season but unfortunately just not enough to secure runners up as Malpas' 'end of season' unlikely 10 goal win against Cheadle Lynotype and a draw at Knutsford puts them in the runners up spot on a single goal difference.

Whaley’s attacking play too much for Crewe’s defence today.

Whaley piled on the pressure from the very start of this game winning lots of corners with Bill Sutton in particular going very close several times. A Broome powerfull header crashed off Crewe’s cross bar followed by some nifty play by Joe Burgess who slipped inside for Leadbetter, his clever pass released George Burgess to glance his shot past the advancing Lyons for one nil. Adam Barlow made some terrific runs and was inches away from scoring on a couple of occasions before he finally made contact with a J Burgess cross at the back post to head in for no 2. Leadbetter too was causing chaos down the wing and latched on to a ball laid back to him, after some nice interplay between Gilbride and Burgess, to smash in from 12yrds. Crewe danger man Southern was always a threat but the resilient pair of Sutton & Streets comfortably restricted him to but a couple of long range efforts. So the visitors went in a very satisfactory 3 nil up at half time.

Second half and Whaley continued their attacking spree and it wasn’t long before a Joe Burgess cross found Leadbetter who leaped highest to head back across goal for his second and Whaley’s fourth. Whaley's two 17 year old Development Squad lads plus U16's Matthew Baldwin were here on the bench to gain some CFL experience. 16 year old Mathew was introduced first early on in the second half and he linked up well but young George Howell who made a dramatic entrance on his debut when with only his second touch he anticipated a poor Crewe defensive clearance and lobbed Crewe’s Lyons from 20 yards, marvelous!!! Dan Connell was next on and he worked Crewe’s back line without fear and his hard work was rewarded when Gilbride’s clever pass released him to square for George Howell to incisively finish off a terrific move in front of a good crowd at Crewe.

Whaley rounded off a good week by scoring 12 and conceding 4 returned to winning ways in which the forwards have showed that by working hard you will get your just rewards. Whilst the forwards were outstanding today a lot was down to a dominant display from D Gilbride J Broome & A Barlow and a confident back four.

Whaley now engage in a ridiculous end of season schedule with a string of difficult fixtures starting at Billinge away Thursday night 7pm kick off, Eagle away on Monday, Ashton Town away on Tuesday and the final game of the season at home on Thursday evening v Rylands.

Very difficult to single out a player today but for his unselfish work rate and terrific attitude sleepless nights for new daddy seem to be doing the trick for MoM Adam Barlow.
