WBAFC Res 2 - 0 Denton Res

Saturday 26th April 2013 at Lostock Gralam

Whaley completed the 1st part of a potential double by defeating Denton in the Reserve Cup Final.

A hard bumpy pitch and a strong following wind didn't make for great football and the game soon became a bit of a long ball spectacle with sporadic flourishes of good interpassing from Whaley and periods of pressure from Denton in the first half.  Central defenders Turner and Hegarty did well to control Denton's physical strike force who were unlucky on a couple of occasions only to strike the woodwork.

However, just before the break Tom Wildgoose latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the area and smashed a terrific volley into the roof of the net to give Whaley a 1-0 lead at half time.

The second half continued in much the same way with Denton pressing but with Whaley looking the more likely to score with chances falling Tom Scorer, who was denied a stonewall penalty, Sam Melville and substitute Lawrence Reynolds who ultimately made the game safe a few minutes from time by coolly heading over the keeper after a bit of a goalmouth melee.

All in all a great win for Whaley's young, and possibly nervy team, who have lost but once this season and go into the next league game 6 points behind leaders Padgate but with 4 games in hand!
