Cup Agony For Under 16s

Whaley Bridge Under 16s put in a valiant effort against Richmond Rovers, only to lose out on penalties. Richmond enjoyed the early possession, and it was no surprise when they took the lead. Whaley fought back well, getting their passing game into gear, and Jack Howell equalised after a sustained spell of pressure. As half time approached Kieran Connell whipped in a free kick from the left. It bounced in front of the keeper who parried it into the air, and Alfie Hodges pounced to head Whaley into a 2-1 lead at the break. Richmond came back again, and their equaliser was a well struck shot from the edge of the box. Zain Saeed had a great chance to seal it, but he shot straight at the keeper, whilst Howell saw his effort skew wide of the goal. Extra time beckoned, and Whaley once again took the lead. This time it was Howell converting with a hooked shot after Richmond failed to clear a set piece. Minutes later and it was 3-3 - with Ash Blackham put under what looked like illegal pressure, but the ref was happy to let it go, and it was time for penalties. Blackham saved early, and with Saeed, Hammad Chaudhry, Hodges and Howell all scoring, Whaley's one miss sent it to sudden death. Elliot Maskrey kept the tie alive as he converted, then there were misses for each side. Ole Madden held his nerve to make it 6-6, but that was as good as it got. We lost 7-6, and although it was a disappointing end to the day, our boys more than matched their higher ranked opponents.
