‘Away Day Blues’

A depleted bridge side made the trip to Crewe and were greeted by a fantastic surface. The Whaley eleven stepped out on to the pitch for the start of the game and were certainly expecting to give a better showing than they did in the first half.

A sluggish start by the away side led to a goal for Crewe. A ball was slid through by the midfielder for Southern to finish into the far corner past Tattersall after a poor offside line. This was then followed by two goals from set pieces, usually a Whaley strong point. The first was a corner that was headed by Crewe’s number 4 and then rebounded in off him after hitting a combination of keeper and cross bar. The second was another corner that wasn’t cleared and a shot from the edge of the box landed kindly at Southern’s feet 6 yards out, he duly dispatched the ball into the net.

After 30 minutes Whaley were 3-0 down and struggling to get any rhythm or control of the ball. Whaley didn’t threaten until Christie cut in from the left hand side and pulled the trigger from 30 yards out only to see a splendid effort bounce back of the crossbar. The game then trickled in to half time with little more play from either side.

Bridge came out in the second half and were determined to make an improvement on a poor first half display. They weren’t rewarded until the 65th minute when Sutton had a free kick cleared back out to him on the right wing where he proceeded to drill the ball across the face of goal for Jackson to throw himself at it and steer the ball beyond the keeper, 3-1. This goal lifted Whaley further but as they continued to push men forward and it was from a long ball that was flicked on for Hammy to coolly slot into the bottom corner, 3-2, 10 minutes to go. Whaley threw caution to the wind and there were chances for either side in the dying minutes of the game with neither unable to find the net again.

Overall a disappointing result for the visitors who are yet to click into gear so far this season.

Starting Line-up – Tattersall, Anderson, R. Newton, Brotherton, Hampson, Sutton, Butler, Wildgoose, Christie, Jackson, Dwolitka.
