In contrast to high scoring recent Whaley wins today it was a resilient defensive second half performance that secured the three points for Whaley. Whaley dominated possession for most of the first half as Congleton struggled to mount any serious pressure until they changed to two upfront; this not allowing Whaley to play out from the back as easily as they had been doing. For all Whaley’s possession there wasn’t much created in terms of chances although Will Bailey delivered some telling crosses which asked questions of Jackson & Lawton and Scorer broke well down the left beating his marker on several occasions but to no avail.  Barlow had a shooting opportunity but scuffed his shot from close range however he did deliver some telling corners and it was from one of those that Whaley scored the only goal of the game as Bill Sutton powered his header into the top right hand corner giving Cooke no chance. Congleton threatened on a couple of occasions but some lack lustre shooting from distance didn’t cause Tattersall any problems.

After some strong words at half time from Steve Davenport’s Congleton came out a different side passing and moving the ball around at a pace Whaley struggled to keep up with. Broome was back after getting married in Greece & Barlow played his first game since getting injured against Knutsford 5 weeks ago, that plus a two week layoff for the rest of the side really showed as Whaley looked jaded. The back five of Newton, Streets, Sutton, Wood & Bailey stood firm with Sutton & Newton winning most of the headers and with Tom Streets anticipating things reading the play well with telling interceptions keeping Congleton’s prolific Erdman & McCurrie outside of the penalty box for the majority of the game.

There were three significant moments for Vale in the game, firstly the referee adjudged Bailey to have handled the ball from a cross so up stepped Erdmann to take the penalty only for Tattersall to guess correctly and with strong hands punch the ball to safety. Erdmann then made a great run down Whaley’s right beating three defenders to close in on goal but his shot was blocked, the ball falling to O’Reilly but Sutton launched himself to block the second opportunity. McCurrie found himself with space at the back post, he shot hard and low only to see Tattersall make a world class save and for Streets to clear.

Broome was in line to get on the end of a corner but was blatantly pushed in the back; the referee didn’t award a penalty which could have sealed the win for Whaley. Dwolitka & Burgess were introduced to cause some issues for Vale; Dwolitka was an aerial threat & had a late shot well saved by Cooke.

Congleton were very impressive and in the second half Whaley’s defenders were asked a lot of questions but overall a very good three points away from home. Chris Lawton was excellent at the centre of defence for Congleton. James Tattersall was Whaley’s MoM.
