It certainly wasn’t the start Whaley were looking for after last week’s result with Malpass very much taking the game to Whaley pressing for the first 15 minutes; Hailes & Morris looked lively upfront but failed to capitalise on a couple of good chances. Tattersall made two good saves first when Morris cut in, turned well and shot from the edge of the box and then Hailes unleashed a powerful shot that Tattersall saved and held onto.

Once Whaley settled into the game Malpass’ keeper Tom Cooksey started to get fully involved saving well from a Gemmill free kick and later a Sutton power blast that he spilled but that Whaley weren’t alive to finish off. So all in all a pretty even half.

Whaley came out in the second half with more purpose and went at Malpass with a lot more desire to work off the ball.  Gemmill did the simple things well and together he and Morris worked well down the left; he and Sutton were arguably Whaley’s best two players and with Gregory on the ball more than in previous weeks it was only a matter of time before the Whaley’s constant pressure paid off despite Malpass’ resilience.  Ultimately the visitors succumbed to a superb first time pass, from Sutton to Gemmill, pulling the full-back over as he was about to shoot; Sutton blasting the penalty low into the corner.

Given the threat of Malpass’ effective counter attacking qualities Whaley needed a second but with Gregory and Burgess firing crosses in they couldn’t quite create a clear goal scoring opportunity with Cooksey in great form in goal for Malpass. Eventually however Lee Morris running in at the back post was tripped giving the referee no alternative but to award a second penalty; Sutton hit his second low and hard to taking his seasons total into double figures and to put Whaley two nil up.

Jack Kelly who struggled a bit in the first half changed his approach and started to look like the potential top player he is as, playing higher up the pitch he ran at the defence in the danger areas. Through on goal several times he unselfishly squared rather than shooting but later took the bull by the horns to beat his marker and turn inside to shoot from 25 yards beating Cooksey in the top corner; great goal!

That rounded-off a satisfying second half performance that dispelled the Knutsford blues with notable performances from Will Bailey - playing his best game for a while, J Gemmill & W Sutton.  Malpass contributed to a tough game on a heavy pitch and can go away with some pride as they look to improve on their current league position.
