Whaley started the game very positively, playing some excellent football and retaining possession high up the pitch in the Eagle half. Streets and Barlow keeping the tempo high with much of the controlled football coming from their interaction with wide players Gregory & Gemmill.

Whaley had three good early chances; the first following on from some good work by Morris came to nothing when Burgess and Scorer went for the same ball causing both to fluff the chance. Burgess then became provider - cutting into the area his shot was blocked but unfortunately Barlow blasted the rebound over. The 3rd chance fell to Tom Scorer who seemed not to see the ball as it evaded everyone in the area and ultimately ‘hit’ him at the far post in front of a vacant goal.

Then on 30 minutes the home side made the decisive break through. Armstrong cleared his lines for Scorer to chase down the centre and loop his header over the advancing Eagle keeper Streckfuss. Kelly linking much of the play was a significant presence in Whaley’s superiority but for all their good possession the home side took only the narrowest lead in at half time.

The next goal was always going to be vital for either side. Eagle manager Rob Hopes’ teams always work hard but Whaley’s defence was resolute though Waldron, Quirk and McAllister in particular were instrumental in their effort to break through but ultimately to no avail.

Young Sam Leadbetter’s cultured left foot delivered some threatening crosses and on another day one of these could have created something. After 15minutes Whaley managed to get the all-important second goal; Captain Newton’s header was cleared off the line only to deflect back off Rob and over the line. Soon after it was game over as Armstrong met a Gemmill cross to head in the 3rd ensuring Whaley picked up the 3 points.

A confident Whaley display this afternoon, left a smile on the manager's face, and well controlled by an assertive referee.
