Derbyshire Senior Cup 2nd Round.

Whaley opened their account in the 2nd round of the Derbyshire Senior Cup against what was potentially their biggest test this season against a very strong and dominant Pinxton side who are flying high in their respective Central Midlands League and still in the FA Vase Trophy. After the usual Friday night deluge the pitch was heavy and only just playable however the early 1:30 cup kick off didn’t deter a big turnout that enjoyed an entertaining all action game.

As per Darryl’s pre-match notes the home side were expecting an early onslaught and he wasn’t wrong! For 15/20 minutes they struggled to get going against a Pinxton side that started exceptionally well with a physical presence, speed of passing and team work ethic that Whaley just couldn’t match and it wasn’t long before the visitors took a deserved lead; Tattersall could only parry a Jay Cooper shot back out to leading goal scorer Pete Stubley who reacted quicker than everyone else to slot in the first goal at the Taxal end.

Pinxton’s Pete Stubley, Nathan Benger, Jay Coper & Wayne Cook were always a handful; they stretched Whaley’s back four from start to finish but eventually the home side did begin to grow into the game, start to play football and assert some pressure and pace. First sight of light at the end of the tunnel saw the two Burgess boys Joe & George go close; both played in by Kelly they raced in on goal to have shots saved by in form Francis.

So still one down but now starting to match the opposition’s commitment Whaley still had the ever-present Tattersall to thank for keeping them in the game with a trademark super save on the half hour. Had that gone in things might have turned out differently.

Whaley’s Sam Leadbetter is always an outlet down the left flank; his crosses always a constant threat with Gorge B and Jack Kelly lurking in the middle. Sam could have scored on one occasion but opted to pull the ball back for Joe Burgess only to Francis save his shot from close in. However today the Broome was Whaley’s talisman; driving his team forward he covered every inch of the pitch in a man of the man of the match performance.

Joe Burgess did level the scores after reacting quickly in the six yard box to tap in a Jamie Kay free kick and not long after he put the home side ahead just before half time firing low and hard to beat Francis at his near post.

The second half saw Whaley in the ascendance though Pinxton continued to threaten on the break. Notable efforts from the home side included a Broome rocket from 30 yards and a fantastic flying header from George Burgess that rebounded to safety off the cross bar with Francis well beaten.

Broome still driving forward after 80 minutes was pulled down in the box; with Sutton injured and rested Jack Gregory stepped up to calmly convert the penalty for his first of the season and Whaley’s third and final today.

We wish Pinxton good luck in the FA Vase next week.

Whaley progress into round 3 to meet Gresley FC in the week commencing Monday 4th December, 19.45 Kick Off; details to be confirmed. Gresley were lasts season’s Derbyshire Senior Cup Runners up losing to Matlock Town in the final but having defeated Glossop North End in the quarters & Buxton FC in the semi-final.
