Finally Whaley find their scoring boots with some terrific finishing however defensive mistakes give Hughes too much time and space and his hatrick earns a point for Malpass.

Early on Whaley pressed with Leadbetter causing havoc down Malpas’ left hand side cutting in and squaring crosses for Whaley’s J Burgess to hit the cross bar; Malpas keeper Desmond also saved a G Burgess effort soon after. Leadbetter again produced more trickery with a great piece of individual skill to beat two defenders, cut in and pull the ball back for J Burgess to make no mistake by smashing the ball into Desmond’s top right hand corner. With Whaley attacking well things changed suddenly when Hughes found time to turn and run at a defender on the edge of the box to shoot hard and low past Tattersall. Minutes later a cross over the back four deep into Whaley’s area found Hughes who was again first to react to shoot hard and low past Tattersall for his second. Whaley Bridge upped their game and went back on the offensive producing a good bit of individual play in the Malpas goal mouth for J Burgess to get his second followed shortly after by a J Broome 25 yard rocket into Malpas’ top corner to make it 2-3 but this game was far from over!

Second half Whaley failed to clear their lines and Malpass attacked with some ease down Whaley’s right hand side, the visitors lost their shape and a one two in the 18 yard box culminated in Turkington grabbing Malpas’ third and the equiliser. More slack play down Whaley’s right meant throw-ins were conceded too easily and Hughes headed in a long throw from within the 6 yard box for his third to put the home side ahead.

Credit to Whaley as they pulled their socks up and had a go at Malpas; a credible penalty was turned down by the referee then a J Burgess free header went just wide, G Burgess still causing lots of problems beat two defender and produced a half volley into the far corner to make it 4-4. Whaley looked for the winner as G Burgess went on a mazy run to just about beat every Malpas defender but eventually had his shot saved. Leadbetter shot just wide and Gilbride’s free kick flew just over.

The game finished a draw and neither side could have been happy with their defending. Whaley were able to field more development squad players A Hodges, D Connell, P Wigg and another 16 yr old Matthew Baldwin who looked impressive when he came on....
