Whaley get back to winning ways in Warrington

All credit to those players who managed to get to Warrington early on a Wednesday evening and who are now going through a punishing end of season ‘away’ fixture pile up, along with most other clubs it must be said, after an inexplicable schedule in which virtually all of Whaley’s home games were played in the first half of the season. The league has now become a real test of resilience, fitness and ultimately a reflection of the strength of the squads.

Though Whaley were carrying a couple of injuries this turned out to be a competitive and entertaining, 40 minutes each way, game in which both sides played some attractive football from start to finish on a pitch that for the most part was reasonable but prone to produce an awkward bobble at an inappropriate moment. The first half finished 0-0 but with the visitors shading it with the occasional darting run and cross from both Leadbetter on the left and Joe Burgess down the other flank; brother George Burgess doing his level best to get on the end of some good moves but the best chance probably falling to Sam whose pile-driver from the left was blocked on the line.

Whaley took more control in the second half with Barlow producing a spectacular overhead kick from a Joe Burgess cross early on. Unfortunately Leadbetter suffered a recurring thigh injury and was replaced after 55 minutes by Alfie Hodges on the left. A series of corners in quick succession indicated the level of pressure Whaley were now piling on and ultimately it resulted in a goal from Sutton heading back across goal to put the visitors 1 up on 60 minutes. Barlow in particular was chasing down and pulling the strings and he along with Gilbride and the Broome took full control of the middle third although Padgate were always dangerous on the break forcing Tattersall to make his customary point blank save to keep the visitors ahead.

The killer punch came 5 minutes from time when Will Bailey received from a throw, on to Gilbride who slipped Joe Burgess through to square for young Alfie Hodges to pass the ball in at the foot of the post to notch up his first in the senior team. Other points of note was a Joe Burgess booking for ‘making a noise’ and his fantastic mazy run which saw Joe beat just about everyone only to be brought down on the edge by the last man; Gilbride’s free kick struck the wall and was cleared.

Another 3 corners in the last 5 minutes all produced scrambles of one sort or another with Barlow again coming close at the near post, Sutton from the far post plus a return pass to corner taker Gilbride who saw his shot saved at the foot of the post.

All in all a really positive display after a series of poor results that still keeps Whaley in the frame for second place; MoM probably new dad Adam Barlow!

Tattersall; Gemmell; Bailey; Streets; Sutton; Gilbride; J Burgess; Broome; Barlow; G Burgess; Leadbetter(Hodges 55)

For Martin Bradley.
