Whaley suffered defeat in the first league game of 2018-2019 season to newly promoted Middlewich Town.

With only a month off before training started this term and barely two months since the last kick of last season here we are again! This time of year is always going to be difficult, probably the same for everyone, with the summer holidays just beginning and cricket still in full swing Whaley had only 5 first team players available supplemented by three trialists so it was never going to be an easy day. With the players available the home side were forced into a 4-4-2 formation and that never really got going as the midfield found it difficult to get and keep a hold on the game.

Middlewich had a game plan with big Rory Gorton up front competing for everything and especially well in the air with Petrie & Short picking up a lot of the second balls. The visitors were gifted the first goal as panic shouts made for a poor Whaley clearance directly to the feet of Petrie 6 yards out who had time to control and slot home across goal into Tattersall’s far corner. Tattersall as has become his trademark made two point blank saves to keep Whaley’s interest in the game alive however the best Whaley could produce were two headers that both rebounded off the cross bar. All in all a draw would have been fair but that wasn’t to be.
