Whaley remain on course for a top four finish after a 1-1 draw against reigning League Champions Knutsford.

Knutsford, who will relinquish their crown having fallen short of top spot, took a second half lead through James Pickford before Ray Dwolitka equalised shortly after for the home side.

Having won 2-0 in the reverse fixture with one of their finest performances of the season, Whaley were confident of completing a double at Horwich Park but came up against a lively Knutsford side that was good value for a point.

The game offered plenty in the way of goalmouth action for those in attendance with the first chance of the game falling to Dwolitka who bustled his way into a shooting position before unleashing a fierce drive which hit the underside of the bar but bounced the wrong side of the goal line before being cleared.

The big striker proved a thorn in the visitors’ side all afternoon and he saw another shot go wide just before the break.

At the other end James Tattersall saved well from the lively Joe Woolley and Kingsley Grandison’s free-kick struck the bar before Rob Newton bravely blocked the follow up.

On a sweltering day, the half-time whistle was a welcome interruption to a frantic 45 minutes which ended goalless but not without incident.

After the break Knutsford took the initiative and capitalised on the hosts’ sluggish start to the half when they took the lead following a neat exchange of passes which culminated in a cool finish from Pickford.

The lead was short-lived though as Whaley drew level just five minutes later; Jack Gregory released Dwolitka who's shot found its way in despite the ‘keeper managing to get a hand to the effort.

Both sides had opportunities to win the game thereafter but Whaley squandered chances through Joe Burgess who fired over from a tight angle before seeing another effort smothered by the ‘keeper.

Joe Woolley found James Tattersall equal to his speculative 30 yard try before Whaley’s number one made a superb low stop from a snap shot before reacting to clear the loose ball himself.

Visiting striker Vinnie Braine directed his header just wide from a free-kick in what was the final chance of an entertaining encounter between the two sides.

Today (Monday) Whaley face Middlewich Town in their final home game of the season.  Three points could see them move into second place.

The reserves slumped to a narrow defeat against fellow title challengers Barnton on Saturday but will be hoping to bounce straight back against Middlewich Town Reserves today (Monday).

Team: Tattersall, Walker (Brown), Newton, Moss, Whelan, J Burgess (Broome), Gregory (Bailey), G Burgess, Dwolitka, Christie

Man of the Match: Ray Dwolitka

WBAFC 1-1 Eagle Sports

A well-earned point in an engaging battle against Eagle Sports ensured that Whaley still have an outside chance of clinching the league title with three games left to play.

Dan Christie’s goal midway through the first half cancelled out Ged McAllister’s opener in an hotly contested encounter at Horwich Park.

The result leaves Whaley in 4th place, six points from leaders Garswood, with a game in hand.  Eagle find themselves a place below Whaley but level on points with five games still to play.

Whaley had lost 2-0 to Eagle on the opening day of the season before avenging that loss with a 3-1 home victory in the Cup in January.

Eagle drew first blood after 20 minutes after poor marking from a free-kick allowed Owen Ellis a free header which was brilliantly parried by James Tattersall only for the prolific McAllister to tap in the rebound.

However the visitors’ lead was fleeting as Whaley levelled things up shortly afterwards; Tattersall’s kick was misjudged by Eagle’s defence and Christie was the beneficiary as he slotted the ball coolly past the goalkeeper.

The hosts had chances to take a lead into the break when Bill Sutton’s scuffed effort was directed goalwards by Christie but the visiting goalkeeper got down smartly to turn the ball round the post.

Ray Dwolitka managed to out-strengthen an Eagle defender and break into the box but his powerful effort was well saved once again by the ‘keeper.

A flurry of Whaley corners looked like it may provide an opportunity for a second goal but Sutton’s excellent deliveries were met with equally accomplished defending from Eagle’s Richard Chinn who cleared from under his own cross bar on more than one occasion.

The second half was something of a stalemate and showcased two of the best defensive units in the league as both sides toiled against respective resolute backlines.

The best chance of the half fell to Jack Gregory who shifted the ball past two defenders only to see his left footed shot blocked.

In an engrossing game for the neutral a draw was a fair result between two well-organised and hard-working sides.

The reserves clinched part one of a potential double on Saturday as they beat Denton Town Reserves 2-0 in the League Cup Final thanks to goals from Tom Wildgoose and substitute Laurence Reynolds.  Congratulations to Dan Turner and his team.

Team:

Tattersall, Johnson (Walker), Newton, Moss, Whelan, J Burgess (Bailey), Gregory, G Burgess, Sutton, Dwolitka (Brown), Christie

Man of the Match: George Burgess

WBAFC 4-0 Barnton

Whaley reignited their title hopes in emphatic fashion after a convincing 4-0 victory over second placed Barnton on Saturday.

The visitors were blown away be a resurgent Whaley side who didn’t give their opponents an inch in a thoroughly dominant display.

A Bill Sutton brace and further goals from Dan Christie and skipper, Rob Newton ensured that Whaley are still in the hunt for the title with four games to play.

After a lacklustre performance saw John Brogden’s team slump to a miserable defeat against Chealde in their previous outing the hosts started brightly against fellow title contenders Barnton and took the lead after half an hour when Sutton was bundled over in the box allowing him to slot home the resultant penalty.

Newton made it two just before half time when he hooked in a loose ball to notch his second of the season.

Brogden asked for more of the same at the interval and shortly after the restart the home side almost made it three but Ray Dwolitka couldn’t convert Sutton’s through ball.

Barnton struggled to get to grips with Whaley’s fast tempo and found themselves 3-0 down when they failed to clear a throw-in and Sutton turned and lashed the ball past the helpless ‘keeper.

The scoring was completed with ten minutes to go when the impressive Sutton delivered a perfect cross for Christie whose glancing header made it 4-0.

Whaley host another of the league’s title contenders on Saturday as Eagle Sports travel to Horwich Park in another huge game for the club.

The reserves were in action twice over the Easter weekend, turning round a two goal deficit to defeat Cheadle on Saturday with goals from Scorer (2) and Hegarty before thumping Pilkington 6-1 on Easter Monday; Tom Scorer with five whilst Liam Prophett grabbed the other.

Team: Tattersall, Johnson, Newton, Moss, Whelan (Hollister), J Burgess (Bailey), G Burgess, Gregory (Heywood), Sutton, Dwolitka, Christie

Man of the Match: Bill Sutton

Whaley missed the chance to make up vital ground in the title race as they slumped to a disappointing defeat against Cheadle.

First placed Garswood and second placed Barnton both dropped points but Whaley failed to capitalise as a goal either side of half-time condemned them to a damaging defeat.

The visitors struggled to create chances throughout the game in a performance which was a far cry from the resounding victory over Greenalls of the previous weekend and one which epitomised Whaley’s inconsistency this season.

Cheadle took the lead after 15 minutes when good link up play between strikers Phillip Yuille and Reece Davies opened up the Whaley defence and presented the latter with the simple task of sliding the ball past James Tattersall.

Whaley looked to respond when Dan Christie created space on the edge of the box but his right-footed shot went just wide.

Neither goalkeeper was called into action for the remainder of the first period but shortly before the break the visitors were dealt a blow when Paul Walker suffered a knee injury forcing manager John Brogden into a re-shuffle at half-time

The hosts doubled their lead against a lacklustre Whaley side shortly into the second half when Nehru McKenzie finished stylishly after the visitors had failed to clear their lines.

George Burgess struck the crossbar from a tight angle in the games only other notable instance.

Whaley face title challenging Barnton next weekend in a game that will shape the remainder of their season.

The reserves ran out 2-1 winners of Denton with goals from Ben Lomas and Tom Scorer securing the points.

Team: Tattersall, Johnson, Walker (Bailey), Newton, Whelan, J Burgess, G Burgess, Gregory, Sutton, Dwolitka (Brown), Christie (Gemmell)
