Whaley DS 3 - 2 19th Hole

Whaley's Newly formed development squad secured a 3-2 victory in their first competitive match last night, against a physical and well organised Team the 19th Hole.

Captained by Alfie hodges playing a 4-5-1 formation Whaley started well and played good football, link up play through midfield was good and hodges, Cripps and Jackson battled hard against their physical style of play allowing the remaining players to play more attractive football and utilise their pace .

First half goals from 16 year old Dillon  Roberts followed by strikes from jack Howell and Alex Cripps, all former junior team players settled the nerves.

The score line flattered 19th hole , who had a lucky deflection which put their striker through on goal , this was followed by another wicked deflection off a Whaley defender which found its way into the net mid way through the second half and gave them hope as they pushed for an equaliser in the final stages .

Whaley were organised, disciplined and the team held in for a well earned first victory.

Whaley fielded 5 players all under 17 years of age in this game , each playing an average of 30 minutes , and it will be our ethos to continue to develop these players through the season.

Thus ends the longest seasonI have ever known as a player and manager. If someone had said we'd be playing till 28th May I would have laughed in their face. However with the backlog of games that is how it has turned out. In February we welcomed back Darryll and John who made an instant impact as they secured a great cup victory for the first team. This in turn motivated and spurred us on in all competitions.

The 2013/14 season has been a resounding success for Whaley Bridge Football Club.  The reserve team finished the season as league runners-up and Challenge Cup champions in just their second Cheshire League campaign, whilst the First Team exceeded all - in what many had thought would be a season of transition – by equalling last season’s third place finish.
