Whaley Bridge 6 Matlock 1

Sunday 1st September 2013.

Whaley’s Girls had an excellent run out against Mattock Town in this pre season friendly.

Whaley started with Abz in goal, a back 4 of Mia, Beth N, Hannah and Mia. Toni and amy in central midfield.  Elesha on the left and Sadie on the right.  Chloe and Beth R up front.

In a closely contested first half Whaley’s finishing proved the difference with Whaley taking a 3 goals lead without truly dominating.  The first was a from Amy Stanton whose shot with the outside of the boot from just inside the area curled away from the keeper into the bottom corner.  Elesha Arnfield soon added a 2nd with a well struck cross - shot from the left which again gave the keeper no chance.  Elesha added a 2nd with a well taken shot from the edge of the area which beat the keeper at her near post.  Matlock pulled back a deserved goal before half time giving Abbey no chance.

With no subs both teams were clearly tiring in the second half and Whaley created a number of chances and added a further 3 goals.  Sadie Osborn blasting home after cutting in from the right and Chloe Hopley with two jinking runs through the centre.  Beth Read also saw a well struck effort rebound off the post. Whaley’s defenders knew they were in a game but limited Matlock to only a couple of clear chances.

The girls settled well into the 4-4-2 formation and special mention to Georgia Fowell who played for the first time as a full back.

It is always great to win but the key aims from today was to give the girls some game time before the season begins next week and to play an 11 a side game rather than the 9 aside they have been playing for the last 3 seasons.
